Two Years of Waiting
Two Years of Waiting: Klaira’s Journey Home
Some dogs arrive at rescue and get adopted within days.
Others wait a little longer.
And then there’s Klaira — a dog who waited two whole years (our longest to ever wait.)
She came to us from the streets of Houston — scared, underweight, and carrying more than just emotional baggage. Klaira had heartworm, a preventable but serious disease that’s all too common in shelter dogs. She was added to the euthanasia list at her local shelter simply because she was sick and no one had stepped forward.
But we said yes.
We brought her to Colorado, gave her the three-injection gold standard treatment for heartworm, and started the long journey of helping her heal — physically and emotionally. Over time, Klaira began to trust again. She wagged her tail more. She stopped bracing when someone reached out to pet her. She started to believe love was safe.
But still… no adoption.
She went to countless adoption events, hoping her forever person would walk through the doors. She had a trial adoption that didn’t work out. Then, a 165-day board-and-train to help her continue to build confidence.
Still, she waited. And waited.
Until one day, she wasn’t waiting anymore.
After six months of fostering her, Klaira’s most recent foster family looked around and realized… she’d already found home.
She was officially adopted on April 18, 2025 — just one day shy of her two-year anniversary in rescue. And now? Klaira gets to spend her days exploring her neighborhood, snuggling on the couch, and playing with her two human siblings. She’s finally safe. Finally loved. Finally home.
Why Klaira’s Story Matters
Klaira is a pitbull — a breed often misunderstood and sadly overlooked in shelters.
She had medical needs.
She needed time.
She wasn’t “easy.”
But she was worth every single second.
And this is why we do what we do.
Adopting a rescue animal isn’t always about instant perfection. It’s about believing in second chances. It’s about giving dogs like Klaira — who’ve survived hardship and heartbreak — the room to become who they were always meant to be.
Because behind every scared face is a dog who’s just waiting to be seen.
Want to Help the Next Klaira?
Right now, we have dozens of animals in our care — many who’ve been overlooked, some with medical needs, and all with big hearts ready to love.
Together, we can keep saying YES to the animals who need us most.
Because the wait is always worth it when it ends in love.
